Welcome to the LAB of Music!

The LAB of Music is a project coming to life this year through the Dorothea-Erxleben Program scholarship of the Ministry of Science and Culture Niedersachsen, and the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover. Organized and run by – Kana Sugimura (Lehrbeauftragte for Violin HMTMH).

The idea of LAB is the creation of time and space in order to experiment on/research different possibilities around the performing of music. It offers the possibility to experiment with different ideas. The Lab is a space to create and explore, to try and fail, to discuss, all around music. A room to prepare and present highest quality music performances from solos, chamber music, music combined with visuals, workshops, to guest speakers and discussions. It aspires to win future audiences through examining the chemistry of “music + …”. To discuss and assess current cultural and social positioning of what is known as “classical” music today.

The projects can range from a traditional classical concert to experimenting what happens when pieces are played with a certain color surrounding us. Or what happens when we are visually stimulated through, for example, moving images, or even a friendly cat. Or how do we experience music in total darkness? How does music affect dancers, how do dancers affect musicians? The different experiments offer the opportunity to get involved and make first-hand personal connections to music to anybody and everybody interested.

Another important function of the lab is open discussion. It will serve as a place to talk about topics such as:

  1. What is it actually that draws us so strongly to music?
  2. Where in the smallest of details hides the power?
  3. What is the future of music?
